LEAVE VENGEANCE TO GOD

by Dr. Karen Colvin on June 10, 2016

in Word of the Week

JesusAmendmentOnlySolution-1-21Sometimes it is difficult for us to digest the full counsel of God’s Word. The evil of this world must be and will be addressed at some point; and only God is qualified to state the time and method of justice. It is never our place to exact vengeance on others; I guarantee you that you will suffer as a result of such an act. Christ commanded us to love them, to do good to them, and pray for them that despitefully use and persecute us (see Matthew 5:44). At this critical time, it is crucial that you remain in the will of God. Leave vengeance to God.

Sessions in Pain, pg. 171 Leave Vengeance to God

Author’s comments:  There comes a point where you must answer the question, honestly, “Do you believe God or not?” Is He just a made up fantasy that you use to comfort yourself OR is He truly your Lord – the One that you trust and rely on when this world is beating you up? He said, “Vengeance in Mine, I will repay.” (Rom.12:19).

Stay saved and Believe Him!

Do not be overcome and conquered by evil, but overcome evil with good.Rom. 12:21 AMP

THE PRICE

Leaving Babylon           pgs. 43-44

As Babylon mastered the art of administering pleasure to us, her ultimate goals became clear. She dangled instant gratifications before us while she hid her price tag. We eventually learned that nothing in her is free; there was always a price to be paid for what she offered—our time, our families, our integrity, and, most of all, our souls. She taught us that everything is for sale. Remember, this is her occupation, for she is a prostitute. She seeks to soothe the weary, the abused, the frustrated, the angry, the jealous, and the vengeful with pleasures and satisfactions of the flesh.

Without the truth of the Word of God in our minds, she ruled our thought life and guided our emotions toward behaviors that seem to satisfy our longings, initially. But sooner or later we had to pay her price.

Many times she would entice us to her ways through minor issues in our lives—the things that did not seem harmful, such as distractions or frustrations. We did not recognize when she planted her seeds in our minds. Therefore, we allowed them to linger as she fed them and grew distractions into neglect of our families and other responsibilities. She fed our frustrations and sadness with unhealthy habits until it sprouted into vines of addictions and obsessions. We could no longer see joy in what God has given us, and we became depressed, angry, and unproductive people.

Our relationship with Babylon began at our conception and ran deep and long. Her beginnings in each of us began insidiously—secretively. We were born into this world of sin, vulnerable to its appetites. Without God, we were helpless to find safety and freedom from her.

Our only hope was within God and His love, who gave us the gift of free will, and with it, we could chose between good and evil. We had the truth of God’s Word, which also ran deep, and it was the only thing that could stand in the face of evil. It is the unchangeable standard that held the key to humanity’s rescue and victory.

Many of us were taught human goodness. However, this goodness, when tried, would often crumble in the face of the enticements and arguments of Babylon. We saw our societal norms changing every day to the acceptance of more and more destructive behaviors as our human goodness failed in the battle with evil. Our behaviors were being modified daily by the temporary positive reinforcements of Babylon. We, unknowingly, embraced the viper that gradually seeped poison into our lives. As the poison flowed deeper into our minds, we could no longer tell good from evil.

The apostle Paul wrote about this condition in his letter to the Roman church (Rom. 7:13–25). He talked about wanting to do good, but evil was ever with him. When he desired to do good, in his humanness, he would fail. He explained that there was a law or force that turned him toward evil. There was something in him that was so powerful that he identified it as a law or a rule that was living in his mind. Something had taken a grip on his way of thinking, something that he had no control over.

Paul concluded in Romans 7 with the declaration that he was wretched, that he could not be a good man even if he wanted to. He had recognized his helplessness in his relationship with Babylon. He recognized that he was her slave. In the final verses, he asked the question, “Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin?” (24b, nlt). He then answers this question with, “Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord!”

THE CULTIVATION

by Dr. Karen Colvin on May 27, 2016

in Word of the Week

broken02At the time of this writing, large banks and corporations are failing in record numbers. People are losing their homes, investments and retirement savings. The test of materialism is upon all of us. What will we learn from this season? Will we panic, become angry, resort to desperate decisions; or will we allow poverty to cultivate us into stronger, more capable human beings?                                                             Sessions in Pain, pg. 38

Author’s Comments: We automatically pray more when we have needs – when we are broken. Prayer cultivates our spirits and prepares it for the seeds of God to be planted and take root. For the poor, the sick and, the despondent – when your hearts are lowliest and bowed you are closest to God.

“Blessed [spiritually prosperous, happy, to be admired] are the poor in spirit [those devoid of spiritual arrogance, those who regard themselves as insignificant], for theirs is the kingdom of heaven [both now and forever]” (Matthew 5:3 AMP).

CREDENTIALS

by Dr. Karen Colvin on May 13, 2016

in Word of the Week

jesus_counsel_on_park_bench_Christ always has and always will have the best credentials to lead us in any situation we must face. We can’t just “name it and claim it”; we do not know what to name or claim for ourselves. Instead, we must direct our faith where and when He guides.                                        Sessions in Pain, pg. 157

Author’s Comments: The truth is, none of us knows what we are doing! We are continuously learning everyday about how to live our lives. Only by God’s grace do we make it day by day. He is the only One who has the credentials to successfully lead our lives.

“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV).

ADAM’S HOUSE

As we look closer at the original Adam, we see that he quickly blamed Eve for his disobedience. He did not protect her or sacrifice himself for her when confronted by God. He did not take responsibility as the leader and confess his error in obeying Eve over God. He “threw Eve under the bus” readily before the Almighty!

As Eve watched Adam do this, we can imagine what went on in her heart concerning him. She quickly had to find her own protection. Therefore, she blamed the serpent for her disobedience. The first “the devil made me do it” excuse was born.

Adam had abandoned Eve, and we can speculate that their relationship was never the same after that day. We can only imagine the conversation they had after their ordeal with God. It was perhaps a conversation riddled with accusations toward each other, each one arguing to save themselves. And so began the dog-eat-dog interaction of Adam’s House that has continued until this day.

Adam and Eve stayed together because they craved each other and needed each other, but their Pray-together-713x509relationship was cursed by distrust, fear, and betrayal. Eve had brought a curse into Adam’s life, and Adam then turned on Eve in a critical moment.

How different would our world be today if either one of them would have held to the word of God through their time of temptation? The tumultuous affairs of men and women on planet earth can only be healed with the reinfusion of the Spirit of God. The Spirit that brings love, peace, joy, faithfulness, patience, goodness, gentleness, kindness, and self-control is needed to renew the relationship of Adam and Eve.

TO REALLY BELIEVE

by Dr. Karen Colvin on April 29, 2016

in Word of the Week

save-from-hellOnce, I was one consumed in pain and discouragement, just waiting for the days to pass when this life would be all over. I was going through the motions of life. Inside, I just wanted to curl up in a fetal position and be left alone. Then one day I made a decision to really believe God. I decided to pull out my mustard seed faith and sincerely talk to God and release my pain to Him.

Sessions in Pain, pg. 32

Author’s Comments: I heard it most of my life – “Jesus loves you, and Jesus will help you.” But it wasn’t until I faced the fire of this life myself and called on Him for myself, did I come to REALLY BELIEVE!

But in my distress I cried out to the LORD; yes, I prayed to my God for help. He heard me from His sanctuary; my cry to Him reached His ears. Psalm 18:6 NLT

Embracing Transparency

by Dr. Karen Colvin on April 23, 2016

in Word of the Week

transparency-business

Leaving Babylon pgs. 141-142

In Christ we can stand boldly before the throne of grace. We can uncover our faces and live in the Light. With our faces uncovered, we can relate to each other with unconditional love and live in peace. We can interact without fear. We can live transparently, allowing others to see our true heart. If we are rejected or betrayed, we will hurt. However, we will always find a refuge in Christ, the Lover of our souls. He will direct and protect us as we live and engage with others. We never have to go back into human hiding, because now we are “hidden in Christ”(Col. 3:3). We live with an infallible security as we love others within His love.

The freedom and love we have in Christ is difficult to comprehend because of how we have been taught in Babylon. We have been taught that love must be earned, or you must be born with certain qualifications or in the right family to be loved. You must be beautiful, knowledgeable, or have something the world values before you can be loved. But Christ loved us while we were yet sinners, while we were yet unlovely. So we in turn have learned from Him to love each other in the same manner. When we accept Christ, His love is shed abroad in our hearts for others, and we see all of humanity differently. We see the broken heart behind the insults or the sarcasm, and we learn to pray for them, pray for their rescue.

THE COVERING

by Dr. Karen Colvin on April 15, 2016

in Word of the Week

Jesus with man in distressJob came to a place of complete emotional collapse. In his tragedies and losses we see a process of testing as, layer by layer, things were peeled away from Job’s life. He endured loss after loss until he laid sick and destitute, covered only by his faith in God.  Sessions in Pain, pg. 35

AUTHORS COMMENTS: To be covered only by your faith in God is a restful place to be. All my stuff is gone! No more pretense or status seeking, just complete exposure as I wait, and wait, within the loving  and  merciful hands of the Almighty.

Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty I’m free at last!                      Rev. Martin Luther King

FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD?

by Dr. Karen Colvin on April 8, 2016

in Word of the Week

christ-world-s

Leaving Babylon pg. 145

I dare to ask, I must ask, but quietly as we are speaking of our precious church that Christ died to establish. Carefully, I present this because this question looks closely at our favorite scripture, “For God so loved the world…” ( John 3:16). The question is, has the church of Jesus Christ been a forerunner in perpetuating hatred toward certain groups—particular failures of humanity? Have we as His church, secretly or subconsciously, decided whom God will love in the world? As we pray for God to fill our churches with lost souls, how many of certain groups would never set foot in our churches because of the fear of rejection they believe would meet them there? And the scripture proclaims, “How shall they hear without a preacher?” (Rom. 10:14b, kjv).

Have we set ourselves up as judge and jury and singled out certain sins as unforgivable? Have we taken the time to understand the depth of certain bondages to minister to it?

RESCUE THROUGH SUFFERING

by Dr. Karen Colvin on April 1, 2016

in Word of the Week

jesus rescueSo often we worship the gifts. We can allow our careers, our money, our things, even our human relationships to take precedence over God, and He is too passionate for us to let it continue in this way. This life can be such a struggle, and He longs to show us a better way; therefore, He strips us of anything that may get in His way to us. Job 36:15 (NLT) records, “But by means of their suffering, he rescues those who suffer. For he gets their attention through adversity.”

Sessions in Pain, pg. 207

Authors Comments: God rescued me through suffering! It the amazing the clarity of thought that comes through loss and tragedy – when you are stripped of everything. You realize, finally realize, the foolish foundation you were living on!

And He Himself existed and is before all things, and in Him all things hold together (Colossians 1:17 AMP).
